Walking into a hookah lounge for the first time can feel a little intimidating — everyone else seems to know the ritual, and you don't want to look lost. Good news: it's genuinely easy, and there's no wrong way to enjoy it. Here's everything a first-timer needs to know.
First, the basics: hookah vs. shisha
People use the words interchangeably, and honestly that's fine. Hookah technically refers to the pipe itself — the glass base, stem, hose and bowl. Shisha refers to the flavoured molasses that's packed into the bowl and heated. So you order a hookah, flavoured with shisha. Now you already sound like a regular.
How a visit actually works
- You're seated. Grab a booth or table with your group. Lounges are built for lingering, so settle in.
- You order a flavour. Your server brings a flavour list. Pick one, or ask to mix two — more on that below.
- The hookah is packed and lit. A staff member hand-packs the bowl, adds the coals, and brings it to your table ready to go.
- You smoke and hang out. Pass the hose, order food and drinks, watch the game. A session is meant to stretch over a couple of hours.
- Coals get refreshed. Staff will swing by to manage the heat or swap coals so your bowl keeps tasting good.
Choosing your first flavour
If you're new, start somewhere easy and crowd-pleasing:
- Fruity — double apple, grape, watermelon, mint. Smooth and approachable.
- Minty / cool — great if you like a fresh, crisp finish.
- Dessert — vanilla, and sweeter blends for a mellow vibe.

A few etiquette tips
- Pass the hose, don't hand it mouthpiece-first — lay it down or offer the base end. Many lounges also provide disposable tips.
- Don't blow into the hose. If it's clogging, let staff know instead.
- Don't touch the coals or move them yourself — just flag a server.
- Tip your hookah staff. Managing your coals all night is a real service.
Common questions
How long does a hookah session last? Usually 45 to 90 minutes per bowl, depending on how it's packed and how you smoke. Staff can re-pack or refresh it to keep the night going.
How much does it cost? It varies by lounge and setup. At Indulge, hookah starts at $20 for our Mystery Hookah, $30 for a mix-and-match bowl, and $60 for a premium setup, with add-ons available.
Do I need to be a certain age? Yes — in Ontario you must be 19+ to enter and be served hookah. Bring valid ID.
